Hi everyone!

It's starting to get colder so please stay warm!

For today, we will be talking about how to apologize.

"Sorry" is the most basic way to apologize, but this will change a bit depending on who you are talking to and in what situation.

I. Daily Conversation

A. For small things

  • Oops! or Whoops!
  • My bad!
  • Sorry! or Sorry about that.
  • Pardon me. (UK)

B. If we made a mistake

  • I'm sorry. It was my fault.
  • I messed up. I'm sorry.
  • I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that.

C. If we made somebody feel bad

  • I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel bad.
  • I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that.

D. For more serious situations, we can add adverbs (like really, truly, deeply) to make our apology sound deeper. Then we usually ask for forgiveness or if we can do something to fix it.

  • I'm really sorry. Can you forgive me?
  • I'm truly sorry. Is there anything I can do?

II. Formal Conversation/Emails

For more formal conversation, we usually use the word "apologize" instead of "sorry. We also often follow the apology with a solution or a promise not to repeat the mistake.

A. For conversations and emails

  • I apologize for [mistake]. I will make sure this doesn't happen again.
  • My apologies. I will fix this immediately and get back to you.

Bonus: For formal business letters or formal announcements
