You don't have to...

徐々に秋めいてきましたね。

 

We'll be talking about the phrase "you don't have to..." today.

We use this when we tell people to stop doing something. 

今日は、「you don't have to...」というフレーズについてです。

何かをするのをやめてほしい時に使います。

 

We usually say this for two reasons:

2つの使い方でよく話します:

 

 

I. To tell someone that there is no need to do what they are doing or are about to do

自分のやっていることや、やろうとしていることをやる必要がないとを誰かに伝えるとき

 

Example: You don't have to come to work on Sundays.

 

例:日曜日に会社に来る必要はありません。

 

 

II.

To tell someone politely that we want them to stop what they are doing or are about to do because we don't want to inconvenience them

迷惑をかけたくないから、しようとしていることを止めてほしいときの丁寧な言い方

 

Example: You don't have to be here at 5am.

I can set up everything myself.

 

例:午前5時に来なくて大丈夫です。自分で準備ができます。

We can use this phrase in sentences by using the base form of a verb after "you don't have to".

動詞の原形は「you don't have to...」の後にきます。
